I've been thinking a lot about that "when did you realize this was serious?" poll and I've got some thoughts on this.

I wondered if maybe it was "Tom Hanks" or "Italy is shutting everything down" but really it was when the NBA suspended the season. By the end of the day, everything had fallen over like dominoes. Just the day before I was talking to the organizing committee for my organization's annual conference and we were confident that we would be moving ahead. But the afternoon that the NBA shut down was announced, I e-mailed the director of the conference and said "I think we need to cancel" and he was resigned to that reality. It was a full 180 turn-around in just one day. No wishy-washy nonsense. The conference was canceled, I was looking to cancel my vacation, and the university was looking to move everything online. It was a little bit like whiplash.
