Tomatoes are a huge bang for the buck when you have limited space. I have done zucchini, cucumber, crookneck squash by using tomato cages and growing -- (edited)

vertically. I have an entire book about how to have a vertical garden, but you can find all those things with a google search. You can really maximize space on a balcony for a huge garden.
