We've been buying Brother HL-L2320D (or successors) for less than that, but the drum life doesn't last for excessive use.

Under $250 is tough for all that. More like $300 minimum. Could you use your current one as scanner only? -- nm

Yeah, you can pretty much do a scanner combo, but it will not have a feeder and only scan one page at a time. Otherwise you can get it under $300
