And had some "oh why not, maybe it'll shake things up" voters. While he has consolidated some of the Republican base, he has nowhere to build from here, and has shed a small but significant portion of it.

Absolutely. But my point is that polls are virtually meaningless this far out from election day (if not arguably meaningless overall).

Results can change - polls are descriptive, not predictive and Black Swans abound. But polls have performed well when we have enough data.
