I've done this with people on the subway as well

especially galling when I'm the one getting chewed out by a passenger for taking an open space at the front of the platform "in front of these people who've been waiting here for ten minutes", meanwhile she ignores the guy who just barges onto the train instead of letting people get off first. We end up getting off at the same stop and as we reach the stairs together, I graciously let her go in front of me, with a gentlemanly bow.
