Nevertheless, compulsory voting has worked in Australia for almost 100 years.

There are pluses and minuses, but I would say the biggest plus is that it encourages everyone to think about their vote.
There are plenty of people who are dumb and/or gullible who still vote, in any election. But I would say the proportion of dumb/gullible voters is higher in an American election because voting is not compulsory. While obviously the proportion of apathetic votes is much greater in Australia.
