I don't have any filters. I've never really set up anything in gmail except labels for the archives. -- nm

Did you set it up as IMAP or POP and tell it to delete messages from the server? -- nm

It looks like I have POP enabled but not IMAP, but it does say to keep items in the inbox. I'm just baffled.

More specifically, the default for POP is to download to the POP client (your phone) and delete from the server in most cases
