I'd consider tattoos to be more of an identification than an enhancement.

tattoos - after all - originated from tribal branding. im not sure the same applies to things like plastic surgery, unless you are really stretching.
my tattoo (which, might i remind you is mostly hidden from view) identifies me as a nerd. so does my nerdy hair cut. your Firefly t-shirt has a similar (albeit less permanent) effect.
