forgive me, i did not answer your other question...

regarding surgery to my child, it depends on whether it affects their functionality. certainly i would want my child to be able to eat food properly and take steps to make sure they can do this on their own as an adult.

however, i would certainly try to raise them with the idea that any physical defect (be it fundamental or superficial) does not equal inadequacy.
