At the start of January, my BFF, who lives not far from pfm, told me she and her husband were both going to Africa for three weeks, and could not find anyone to stay with her two teen boys, ages 16 and 14. Essential information: The 16 year old is Aspie, he is emotionally maybe 12, strongly oppositional. That's why she couldn't find anyone. I was a bit tentative, she said she would pay me, I said, don't give me money. I want a new Nespresso machine. She also said, her dad would arrive after 2 weeks and he would take over caring for the kids, and then I could go home.
So. It was interesting. The 16 year old is shall we say difficult. I got up the 14 year old, he leaves first and gets the bus. He once forgot to set the alarm, just like I did when I was 14. I drove him to school, he felt bad. The 16 year old doesn't set an alarm because he hates alarms. He does wake up, most of the time.
So, on the first Monday, 14 didn't hear the alarm, I drove him to school.
On Tuesday. I thought both of them got off to school then I went to work. Then I got a message on WhatsApp from Africa
Turns out he DIDN't get up. He called in himself sick, pretending to be a parent, and he said, Anthony can't come to school today because he has a fever of 106
He got a day's detention for it
Meanwhile, for two weeks, both boys were supposed to be cleaning the kitchen. Shall we say, they did not. It was horrific. They were supposed to be proving they were responsible. Ha ha.
On the Friday at the end of the two weeks, the day Grandpa was flying from Seattle to DC, I got a frantic WhatsApp from my friend in Africa.
