I did not have $3500, but I knew she would never ask unless it was life or death. So I took it out against my PLOC. She was so relieved, she said YOU SAVED US.
Please note, she grew up wealthy. She said she tried calling her dad but he was in the air at the time, flying from Seattle to DC. That's true.
So, I took out the loan. Later that day, her dad showed up, to "relieve" me so I could go home. It was immediately clear he could not do that. He's 80 years old, hates driving, and he needs looking after. I realized, I need to stay for another week. I messaged her in Africa saying, I need to stay here another week. She said oh yeah, he can't really handle it. REALLY?
Did I mention, I paid for all the food for three weeks?
