401(k) accounts have limited choices, some of those choices have fees. you'll have better control over your money if you do something like a zero fee Fidelity or Vanguard index fund through a Roth IRA, plus that money is more accessible through the Roth. 401(k)s are only nice due to the contribution, i wouldn't choose them otherwise.
