It's possible that the fee to you went up because their cut of any SkyMiles you would use is going to be zero.

You stopped being profitable as a customer and keeping a zero $ balance probably added to their desire to lose you.
They obviously still would be getting the retailer fee on every transaction, but no interest from you and no cut of the SkyMiles, which probably saw some changes on their end from Delta since travel is way down.
