I started back up with the Wastelanders update last week. Finding it more engaging with the addition of actual other humans, although after an early questline with some new human characters you have to get to level 20 to get more. I was level 5 when I dove back in, up to 14 now. Beginning to feel grindy to get to 20 to get to the new Raiders vs Settlers content though.
It's much stabler now. I haven't been kicked/disconnected even once where when I originally played that would happen often. And nothing too terribly buggy - yes, there's bugs that happen but they're mostly of the floating brahman or ghoul stuck in a wall variety.
It feels much Falloutier than it did before. Still, there's a lot that irritates me I'm trying to ignore, mostly around enemis/combat. Enemies that spawn in will often be WAY too high for my lowly character (Level 78 super mutant overlord? Guess I'll run away!) because a higher level player may have recently wandered through the same area before I got there.
Gun play with enemies sucks. Not just due to the lack of true VATS, but the point of VATS was to make up for the fact that Bethesda's games have shit combat. Enemies are either bullet sponges or direct head shots do no damage. And the length of time it takes to reload?!?! Often easier to just arm a melee weapon and hack and slash the enemies since every enemy's modus operandi seems to be rushing at you the second they spot you.
The monetization/Atomic Shop is swarmy as fuck. Very in your face when signing in. Walking around the world, checking out higher level players' camps is neat. But anything you see that's cool you may want for you own camp? There's roughly a 99% chance it's something you have to buy in the Atomic Shop. Yes, you can earn the currency for that in game, but not much. I refuse to pay real world money for anything, no matter how much I want that deathclaw skin rug for my camp house.
Running into players in Apalachia is actually a pleasant experience. Doesn't seem like anyone is out to kill other players. In fact, higher level players have on numerous occasions gone out of their way to seek me out an give me items - stimpaks, ammo, food, Nuka Cola, even got a tricked out missile launcher. Many higher level characters have even set up their camps as kind of welcome centers in the games early area, selling cheap ammo, stimpaks and camp plans to build items.
They really need to work on the "team" functionality though. Right now, you can't concurrently do quests with others. The team leader can, but the others in the team just sort of follow along and don't get credit for completing said quest. They'll have to do it separately.
Overall it seems like a B- kind of game now. If you loved prior Fallouts, you'll probably like a lot of 76. The map is extensive with plenty to explore. Worth buying? I'd say sure, if you're a fan of the series and since it's under $20 for XBox of PS4. I'll at least keep playing to get thru the Raiders vs Settlers stuff.
