If you want to be sure that you won't end up like your coworker, don't go. Don't do anything. Stay home all the time

This isn't high school anymore, where your life is dictated by what other people think and what your friends have done/think is cool. You're an adult, you need to take your own decisions and deal with them.
Next time you want to come to TT and ask us about a personal situation we know nothing about, think about it for a few minutes, maybe you'll find your own answer. If you always ask everyone about everything you'll never learn to take responsability for your actions.
Usually, if you're not sure about what to do for something, I say go for it. Wost case scenario it will not work, but you'll learn a lot about yourself by failing. Eventually you'll know more what's good for you and what's not, and you won't need other people as much. If you never act, you'll always live in doubts
