Clapton just made that name up because he didn't want to be in the spotlight.

Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs didn't even chart in the UK upon first release, even though it was a hit in the US. It saw a resurgence in popularity after Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident.

Eric Clapton was born Eric Patrick Clapp.
