I think I've used mass transit in at least a dozen cities (not all in the US)

Definitely not all of them, or even all the major cities. (I've ridden, literally, two stops on the Paris Metro ever, so doesn't really count).
And, true, I've gotten to know the NYC metro pretty well over the years. But all major metro systems are daunting at first. That's a major barrier to entry for people, I think
