Also, is this info more widespread? In the movie, there are nine satellites capable of spotting it, and eight of them are controlled by the US.
Social media and general connectedness is a big change since the film. In the movie, there are people in France listening to the US president's speech over the radio.
Not really a technological change, but the US doesn't have a way of getting astronauts and drillers into space these days.
