I don't know why they offered it to Nick, or why he bought it. I think he bought it just because it was offered.
The better play would have been to offer it to Denise who is in the majority and had 6 tokens. She likely gets at least 2 tokens from someone else and plays it against Michelle. The one thing they didn't want was her winning immunity. It would have been worth the tokens to make it that much harder for her.
That advantage is horrible for the people on the bottom. It isn't bad if the majority gets it and uses it to stop their plan a from hanging around.
You are right that the first boot is in too strong a position.
