apparently Iran performs more gender reassignment surgery than any country in the world except Thailand, and the state funds 50% of the procedure. Islam in Iran says gender reassignment is fine, but homosexuality isn't, so the upshot is you have a lot of gay men becoming women so they can live their lives in accepted relationships with other gay men. very strange situation.
