I used to think that to a large degree until I saw a 20/20 episode on kids with gender identity issues.

Pretty young kids (under 12) and in that context you can see that it's real. Something they've felt since they were born. The messed up adults that you see choosing this, it's easier to say that they're choosing it because they're messed up. After that episode I really began to understand that the cause and effect goes the other way.
