I think it's abundantly clear that the mortality rate isn't just (identified deaths)/(identified cases)

both the numerator and denominator are wrong. But I don't think there's anyone left that still thinks that's the real calculation, which is why there's a lot more emphasis on per capita cases. It doesn't tell you much about the actual mortality rate (which, honestly, is trivia - it's killing 10s of thousands, will kill 100s of thousands by the end) but does tell you about the efforts to prevent it.
