I'm more along the lines of hoping a majority of those "defying" people catch the virus - but not die.

if they go to these huge group activities and nothing happens, then I think it gets worse.
But there's no tracing to know who was there that night to then say "see? 30 out of 50 of them got infected." It's still going to be arbitrary, anecdotal numbers, which is not going to help shine a light on the problem.
