In this day and age, though, is there even an industry that could benefit from the pool of unskilled labor that an FDR-style works program might generate? -- nm*

Pretty much any job in the construction industry can use unskilled labor -- folks starting out as apprentices. -- nm

To your first point, I did see an article mentioning conservation efforts would be a good way to put people to work. -- nm

we're starting fire season in the west. 5000 extra people trimming everything back would be great -- nm

I think it would look different but spending it on trade training and paying people to take it would be similar.

Combine 'em. Construction requires office staff, skilled trades, technicians, etc. Employ and train. Extra skills = Extra flexability for them. -- nm

I think that infrastructure (similar to FDR) would still benefit from unskilled labor

Sure. We could hire people to dig holes and fill them back up again, if we want a jobs program just for jobs' sake. :) -- nm

I'd settle for just filling holes (potholes) which would be an incredible benefit and create a bunch of useful jobs -- nm

Though the maintenance kind of does? And I've yet to see a completely automated dam builder and Michigan just showed that those need work

Right, it's a question of scale, not that there wouldn't be any work to be done. -- (edited)
