So we have our issues with our current government and with good reason but it seems less than confidence building that a landfill with radioactive materials has been an issue since the 70's. A landfill that at one point was smouldering and it was considered not to be an issue as it would self exitinguish

And this is is still a thing and granted one can currently point at Trump for dismantling the agencies like the EPA but there's an entire history here.

Like who thought it was a good idea to process weapons grade uranium in St Louis? It's not like it was a small place back during or immediately after WWII. Then to move the resulting nuclear waste from site to site around the general area for years until it ended up in the West Lake Landfill. Not a specialized disposal site but just a landfill and then try to forget about it. Seemingly nobody told the possible impacted residents for all those decades.
