I find it handy to look back at the previous iteration's polls

like comparing Clinton/Trump with Biden/Trump, you can see that Trump is actually running basically the same in polls, it's just that Biden is getting a significant amount of fencesitters on to his side. The 43-41 polls are becoming 48-41.
In this race's case, there was an independent so it's tricky (they always poll higher than they get, but it was generally like 45-33-8, so the Dem is getting more people to affirmatively choose him than last time.
