For example, a 3 GHz processor that's downclocked will run at 2 GHz causing less heat and power consumption. I used to overclock my processors to get -- (edited)

more than what was advertised. That causes a lot more heat and power consumption which means a bigger heatsink and fans.

Xbox was having overheating and power issues so I guess they downclocked their consoles to prevent them from failing.
