I don't think it's because it's what we want to believe. I think it's because it's what we're being led to believe. These things are reported

without meaningful context. You have to go to multiple sources to figure out what it means. And as it's reported this way it does actually grow. Maybe not to majority status, but from a small group of outliers to a relevant minority.
