I wish police chiefs would explain the tactics we keep seeing.

The police form a line perpendicular to the street and just stand there a while, giving protesters something to come front up against. It's clear the protesters aren't throwing or burning or smashing anything, so the police line could just walk away and there would be no issue (same with colin's situation)

Meanwhile in other places like DC, they form a perpendicular line, and either do nothing when looters are down the street smashing stuff, or advance on the crowd and compress them which helps obscure the violent people in the crowd who light trash cans on fire as they retreat.

It seems to me that if the police lined the length of the street rather than perpendicular to it, they could protect the storefronts and potentially reach the violent individuals faster to stop them.

'But the crowd might surround and attack the police.' Well in the multiple days I've been watching multiple channels, maybe I've missed it but I don't recall any time where the crowd tried to batter or jump the police. They just line up an yell.

Even from a crowd control point of view I don't see how a police line bulldozer motion is a sensible use of resources. It's not even clear why it's of use to push the crowd out of one place into another.
