What's more effective: Sending an organization $20 right now (and again in a few months), or a $5 monthly donation for (at least) the next year?

I have the means at the moment, and want to support some organizations (and am also overwhelmed and dismayed at the sheer amount of options), but wonder if a smaller monthly donation is more effective, especially since there's a big surge in money going to these places right now.
