I learned in 2018 that while they’re a ticket in the general, the governor and lieutenant governor are chosen in separate primary elections in NY.

I also voted for Williams in the primary (along with Cynthia Nixon for governor) and he did about 10 points better then she did, and if I remember right it very briefly looked like that he had a real chance at wining, but then I think the upstate and western NY votes came in (which is where Hochul is from) and she won fairly comfortably.
