And I do think it's important to distinguish between malice and ignorance.

I doubt you're ever going to change malice, but I'd like to believe that is not the norm. Although not easy, I believe that ignorance can be changed. Even if the current end result is the same, if you lump them together those that are acting out of ignorance are going to feel attacked and defensive. At that point, you've lost them.
