There were a few years when people got Caller ID on land lines, and you couldn't hide if you were staying over at someone's house, etc.

I think it's fascinating how quickly-evolving technology has so strongly affected movies and TV. I'm just doing this off the top of my head, but think of how these little things have been pivotal in plots, more or less chronologically:
- Needing an operator to connect you
- Phone booths
- Having to be home to get a phone call
- Cordless phones
- Answering machines
- Being able to reset a message on an answering machine
- Caller ID (that alone cancelled out decades of plots)
- Cell phones
- Texting
- Smart phones
