Disney has tried to theme many of their park attractions to their movies. The Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Country Bear Jamboree, and even all of Tomorrowland existed independent of the movies... until Disney made movies based on the rides! Splash Mountain, at least, was tied to their movies, so it didn't exist in a vacuum. But there's bad karma there. Disney's not going to want to answer those questions. It'll be easier to change the ride than face uncomfortable questions.
