neighborhoods with high crime rates. Same with the war on drugs. The idea of more police for more protections makes intuitive sense and people bought into it widely. It's only in the last few years that people have really started focusing on the costs and what this approach has shown itself to be. So (a) I think we can't have purity tests for politicians that used to push for these things. Views can evolve and (b) it's not surprising that the beneficiaries of the system are the ones who have the hardest times dealing with or seeing the change. This is the world today. It is changing rapidly and a lot of people (particularly those who don't experience the concerns that others are living with) are going to have a hard time adapting. But the sudden shift in polling says people are getting enlightened quickly.
