Anything more than 4 years and it's going to be harder to find the parts.

I considered getting a processor for my 5 year old machine but it would have cost a good penny. When I replaced the hard drive I checked the performance tab while doing things and the CPU was no where near maxed out. But finding the right chipset and mount to match your motherboard is a pain. So I'll use this box as a plex server only once I replace it in a couple months.

But if your machine is 5 or more years old, just replace the whole thing. Tech changed a lot in the last 5 years. Well, enough that there is a new standard for RAM.
