I think a lot of the Islam that gets aired in the west is of a Saudi bent, and that's very fringe. very powerful, but very fringe.

I've spent a fair bit of time in Indonesia and Kazakhstan in the last few years, and there's a very wide range of practise. They're by an overwhelming majority 'do what you like, but respect that this is a majority Muslim country.' hijabs or niqabs are entirely optional. almost nobody in Kazakhstan wears them, in Indo they're common, but generally used as a fashion accessory. Though Indo has a fair number of fundamentalist pockets trying to change that a bit. I think broadly categorising close to two billion people with 'Islam's horrible treatment of women' isn't a helpful opening statement.
