To me it is representative of a repressive culture. That's a great question about nun's habits. I definitely don't have the same impression there

at first glance it feels less of an issue because (as Spamlet said) the nun's have indeed made a significant choice to enter into that life. At a superficial level, there is a significant number of women in that religion/culture who are being treated very poorly with this outward manifestation being only the smallest and most insignificant representation of it...
