Apropos of this, following band practice the last 2 weeks, we've all been having discussions about race and prejudice issues. It is a diverse group.

Currently we have 3 black members and 3 white members. One woman (who is black, and to make things more interesting, a former cop). One of the white men has a black partner (I don't think they're married but have been together for 10+ years) and one of the black men has a white spouse. It's pretty fascinating in the complexity of the interactions.
The biggest takeaway for me is to recognize that everyone is different and everyone's experience is different. The 3 black members did not have a uniformity of views about things. The man with mixed race children noted the isolation his kids feel not really being accepted by any group. The black woman had the most bright line of rules that all transgressions were essentially the same, while at the same time giving cops a break and saying that the force reflects the society as a whole (which to be clear she said as sort of "we can't expect more from cops"). One of the black men viewed it as his responsibility to try to teach people who are more ignorant than deeply racist. I can't really boil it down. It was an hour long discussion and very complex, but as I said, the biggest takeaway is that it isn't one thing. Everybody's experience informs their views. Which is part of what makes the whole issue complex. But I'm learning a lot from this.
