I assume when making the offer, that is before trade in and down payment is even mentioned.

I know last time I bought a car, 10 years ago, they kept focusing on how much I wanted my monthly payment to be. And somehow I wasn't smart enough to realize what they were doing and "gave me more for my trade in" and then extended the load to 66 months to get me where I "wanted to be". Not going to fall for that one again.
