Not everything is from 2020 but it's at least close.
Hail the Ghost - "Arrhythmia" - aka The Irish National. Highlights - Sweet Samurai, Gwendolen
Phantom Planet - "Devastator" - highlights BALISONG, Party Animal
Phoebes Bridges "Punisher" - *the* discovery of 2020 for me - I've described her as getting in on the ground floor of the new Aimee Mann - it's also sent me down the path of her compatriots Lucy Dacas and Julien Baker (the latter of whom can *belt* but is a little too 'sad coffee shop girl' for me)
Erika Wennerstrom - "Sweet Unknown" - lead singer of Heartless Bastards goes solo. 'nuf said.
Run the Jewels - "RTJ4" - hip hop and rap makes very few appearances on my list but this is vital.
The Beths "I'm Not Getting Excited" - strong female led power pop from NZ - better stuff on their last album, "Future Me Hates Me"
Hazel English - "Wake UP!" - Lykke Li with emotionally supporting relationships. "Shaking"
Other Lives - "For Their Love"
The Used "Heartwork" - obnoxious pop punk this side of Fallout Boy but works somehow
The White Buffalo "On the Widow's Walk" - Nathaniel Ratlieff with 1/4 more country.
Laura Marling "Song For Our Daughter"
Cavetown "Sleepyhead" - highlights "Sweet Tooth"
Andy Shauf "Neon Skyline" - do you like weird musical stories by someone who sounds like Paul Simon with a speech impediment? Of course you do.
Beach Bunny "Honeymoon" - more female power pop
The Zolas "Come Back to Life" - not as catchy as what was on their last album, which was highly danceable pop rock. They come from the AC Newman school of layering hook on hook.
Tame Impala "The Slow Rush" - I mean I *guess so*.
The Standstills "Badlands" - Royal Canadian Blood
Fiona Apple - Fetch the Bolt Cutters - not as transcendent to me as everyone else but it's damn good
The Pack A.D. - It Was Fun While It Lasted - they go out strong
Joseph - Good Luck, Kid - Haim but without turning into Wilson Phillips
Joel Plaskett - 44 - Dude needs to *chill* on the songwriting already
Laura Stevenson "The Big Freeze"
Ratboys "Printer's Devil"
Frances Quinlan "Likewise"
