Something you can do if you buy DVC is rent your points.

You'd get $13.50 back per point, which means that if you bought 100 points, you'd have $1,350 to put toward a vacation somewhere else that year.
Of course, you'd still pay maintenance fees in January, so you may not come out ahead by a lot. The fees would be about $700 annually.
