Question about your school

I was out the other night and was chatting with a friend's friend whom I had never met. I quote "I'm in grad school in connecticut, studying architecture." I ask "Yale?" and he's like "Yeah." Didn't seem like he wanted to say he went there?
Is Yale a school where you kind of just refer to as Connecticut, or was he not trying to let it out. Like for example when someone says UMD you assume College Park, unless they state otherwise?
