I really would love to understand the economics of it all, to justify so many different platforms.

I would think that the software / subscriptions is where most of the game is, too.
Responses:
Sony has a contract with Microsoft to use Azure as the backbone of the Sony game streaming services so not just front facing portion of it that helps
