We are 3, but the apartment is probably over 1000 sq feet. I have my space (or two, actually, my bedroom and "my" TV room). My parents spend most of their day in the next room, formerly my sis', where they have their TV and their computers and books and all.
I could go downstairs, there's enough space there to walk around, but I don't, really. We've had cases in the building, better not to risk going to the common areas.
