It is. The setup is designed for local sharing as there's a graphic to be scanned to join the group. -- (edited)

I'm guessing while not impossible, it makes a bit wonky to have people not in direct contact join the group.
In person, piece of cake. Group originator generates code, people to join the group walk over, scan the code via their phones and voila: group.
Remotely, I see it as at least two step and so far I can't think of away around needing at least two devices.
So group originator screenshots image. Then emails, text messages, social media shares it. Thing is that the people looking to join are going to need two devices. One to display the code, the other to scan it
At least that's my initial take on their setup
