It is in beta so perhaps what we've seen isn't completely what's in the announcement

They describe it as pretty much exactly like how we hoped it would work. It doesn't seem to work like that for us.
However, that announcement also describes this:
Ready to get started? Click or tap the Connect menu in the bottom-left corner of the play screen and scroll down to “Start a group session.” Then, share the invite link with your guests or have them scan the Spotify code to join the session.
Link? What Link? (I feel like there's a Zelda joke in the works)
Having that invite link does away with the screnshots we just did and is much more remote friendly.
