First time? Huh. It started to gain popularity a few years back and they're slightly different than say a slipper or flip flop.

They tend to be thicker in the sole than other sandals and have a bit more style to them though there's only so much you can do with such a simple thing like a slide.
The word has been around for a very long time but it wasn't used as much until about 5 years ago.
