I understand that argument and I have sympathy for it in general, but I don't agree with that sentiment when it comes to criminal behavior.

I understand that it is their trauma, not mine, and that I don't get to tell them how they should experience it or deal with it. But we also have a need for societal rules and norms and the failure by some to live up to it doesn't give free reign to the others to ignore the laws. I can fully understand and have sympathy for a father who murders his child's rapist and yet still believe that it's murder and needs to be punished. No matter the trauma it doesn't justify any action a victim chooses to take without consequence. A society just cannot function that way. So yeah, there are laws that put limits on the ways that people can act out on their trauma. There are laws that are not justifiable that need to be changed, but I don't think many would argue that looting is among them.
