Hopefully most of our university's savings during the pandemic (what keeps us from slashing all academics) comes from athletics.

It's going to be a tough couple of years for higher ed. Most schools lose money on athletics but keep it around for intangibles like "prestige". That's millions of dollars going to coaches and directors and staff who, right now, aren't doing shit. So when there's layoffs, they should be the first to go. For most states - as we've seen - the highest paid public employee is the state university's football or basketball coach. They better not pay that salary if there's no football or basketball.
